Ingredients
  • 4 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced into rings
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Cheddar cheese

Step: 1 First, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C), and butter a 1-quart casserole dish.

Step: 2 After that layer 1/2 of the potatoes in the base of the arranged casserole dish, and season with salt and pepper. Then layer the onion slices over top, and top with the remaining potatoes. Redo the season with salt and pepper.

Step: 3 Take a medium saucepan and melt the butter over medium heat. Slowly whisk in the flour and salt and cook, whisking continually for about 1 minute till the raw flour flavor has cooked off. Little by little add the milk, about 1/4 cup at a time, whisking it well after each addition, the gradual addition and whisking constantly of milk will help you to avoid lumps in the sauce.

Step: 4 Now Cook, and keep whisking for around 3 to 5 until the mixture becomes thickened. Stir in cheese all just at once and keep stirring for 30 to 60 seconds till melted. Spill the cheese sauce over the potatoes, and cover your dish with aluminum foil.

Step: 5 Lastly, bake in the preheated oven for about 1 ½ hours till the potatoes are tender and the sauce is bubbly, serve hot!
